Follow That Bean
Some things … coffee for instance … don’t need much chatter. The simple pleasure of a good coffee is one of life’s rich joys. And for residents at 381 Cremorne, the good news is you don’t have to go very far at all to savour a barista-quality cuppa.
When coffee houses first opened up in Paris and London, they were frequented by the well-to-do and high society. Nowadays, coffee is seriously chic, and hyper-trendy, and that means it’s now drunk by young people as well as old.
There’s a café in Cremorne, one of the many quite new and very stylish establishments networking the precinct, which used to tweet its soup and origin beans each day, live to a screen on the wall. But, like we say, cut the chatter, and go straight to the brew. Nowadays they’re too busy to tweet too much…
You might head straight to Church Street and the well-known Top Paddock or Pillar of Salt, but here’s a couple of ideas if you like the idea of going where the locals go, or sniffing out an aromatic macchiato in an unobtrusive laneway.
Close by your boutique accommodation at 381 Cremorne, as you head down Cremorne Street and turn into Dover towards the railway line, you’ll find the bright and breezy Café Tazza, where the coffee is good. Venture on a little further, still heading towards Church Street, and you’ll come across Expresso Café in the long corridor of Balmain Street. This is about as “local” as you can get, full of young designer types who, no doubt, know their beans full well. Good food here too, excellent for a quick breakfast or lunch.
Another one you might like to ferret out in this neck of the woods is the oddly named The Boy Who Cried Wolf. It’s in Newton Street, but tucked off the laneway, behind a couple of offices and businesses Very friendly, good brisk service and excellent quality coffee.
If you find yourself up the other end of the precinct, the very fine Grafali Coffee Roasters, is at 58 Bridge Road, quite close to the much-touted Richmond Hill Café. Nice place for brunch, both busy and cosy, with a scrumptious range of cakes and things to complement your latte.
